In the last Wardrobe Architect post, Your Color Story, we collected images that had colors in them that spoke to us and gathered them into a group of favorite colors. Today we're going to break those down into usable data that can help us pick fabrics and accessories for our new wardrobe.
First, let's revisit our favorite colors from the last post. Below is my color story:
After you have your color story, let's categorize these into our main colors, which will be the bulk of your closet, and our accent colors, which will provide pops of color. Those accents can be on the print of the fabric, or a detail on the garment like a color or pocket, or an accessory item to embellish your clothing.
Below are my main colors, which I then named. I know it seems like a weird task, but I actually found it incredibly helpful to name them. It helped me understand them beyond just looking at them. What kind of gray is it? Is it warm? Is it cool? Is it more like the sky, or more like a Parisian rooftop? How does it make me feel, and how does that help inform the name of the color?
Do the same with your accent colors, as I did below. Now it should be noted that these are my personal picks. Yours could be the dead opposite! Perhaps for you, the bulk of your closet will be hot pink, bright red, vibrant mustard, and the accent colors will be the quiet neutrals. This is totally a personal process and there is no right or wrong answer!
In upcoming weeks, we will use these colors to inform our capsule palette and they will help us pick prints and textures as well. To see what Sarai picked for her colors so you can see how dramatically they differ from mine, check out the original Organizing Your Palette post. The idea behind this is to customize it to your personal tastes, so let your feelings and emotions drive this part to tell you what you're drawn to.
Your exercises for this week is to do this for yourself–group your colors and name them, and see how they make you feel, then reorganize and sort as you see fit! Next time we will use this data to talk about fabric–solid, prints, textures, and more! You know you love fabric....!
