One of the promises I've made to myself now that my
is written and I have a little more time, is to actually take days off of the studio. A lesson I learn every time I take a vacation is that stepping away can seem like you're being unproductive, when in reality, taking breaks is exactly what keeps you going and inspired.
I've been in the craft scene for nearly 10 years and in that time I have crossed paths with some pretty amazing artists. One of those people that I always watched from afar is Natalie Davis, aka,
. We had never met, though we've been in attendance at the same shows from time to time and have many mutual friends. Natalie has many creative outlets. Her latest is
, a line of hand crafted leather goods.
While in Paris, I saw on her Instagram feed that she was going to host a workshop in Los Angeles, followed by
. She lives in Austin, so having an opportunity to take a class with her is a treat and it was a perfect example of the kind of things I want to spend more time doing on my days off. Last Saturday I attended her leather tooling workshop at Dream Collective in Silver Lake and got some aggression out by pounding into leather and making key chains in the process. Above are the ones our class made. Aren't they professional looking?
The class was super satisfying and everyone in attendance clearly had a great time. We learned all about the process of stamping, cutting, drawing into, polishing, dying, and sealing leather. I lured my pal
to join me, and afterwards we hit the
in downtown LA. We hid under hats to protect ourselves from the sun, and scored some awesome crafts as well as a cocktail or two! Overall, a wonderfully crafty Saturday!
If you're in the San Francisco area, both Natalie and Renegade are on their way to you this weekend, so you too can have a day of craft! Oh, and if you are in the San Francisco area and are looking for a fun class, my bestie
is teaching a
at the awesome Makeshift Society tomorrow night! Check it out!
